Basement Boys

ABOUT US

Who are the Basement Boys?

It was 1986 when the first sounds came rumbling from a basement studio in Baltimore USA as three young DJ friends began making music on a 4-track recorder... Little did The Basement Boys know that they would evolve into one of the most respected and acclaimed names in the world of dance music. Over the years The Basement Boys have witnessed an ever changing musical landscape, but their goal and their focus to consistently create, release, and expose quality sounds has never changed, achieving both commercial success and underground credibility.

In 2001 to celebrate, reflect, and showcase their fifteen years of dedication and ability to deliver truly soulful sounds, delving into their extensive repertoire of gospel, house and garage, The Basement Boys unleash an awesome two-disc set of their finest productions, lovingly mixed by DJ Teddy Douglas and DJ Spen. The 15th Anniversary Mixed CDs takes you on a spectacular 22 track musical outing of historic sounds that have emitted from their Baltimore studio. Featuring early underground gems such as 33 1/3 Queen's "Searchin'" and "Tonite" by Those Guys, to the career launching tracks of Ultra Nate and Crystal Waters, cuts featuring the cream of soulful vocalists such as Kenny Bobien, Ann Nesby and Martha Wash, and also success stories such as Taja Sevelle, Fertile Ground, and Jasper Street Company; this compilation is a culmination of the hard-work and vision of The Basement Boys production team and indeed an education for any music lover.  In 2006 they followed this mixed CD with a 3 disc unmixed Anthology.  This Anthology is truly a collection of Basement Boys’ classics representing their first 20 years releasing quality music.

The original Basement Boys Production team was Jay Steinhour, Teddy Douglas, and Thommy Davis. Davis left to pursue other ventures in 2002, about the time DJ Spen joined the team. Along with musicians Irvin Madden (bass), Gary Hudgins (keyboard), Wayne Cooper (guitar), and Victor Williams (percussion), the Basement Boys have been responsible for some of clubland's biggest anthems. Following the success of their debut single, "Love Don't Live Here", signed to Jump Street Records, the Boys rose to commercial prominence producing Ultra Nate's debut album "Blue Notes In The Basement" for Warner Bros., as well as her 2nd album "One Woman's Insanity". Meanwhile, they were quickly becoming underground club faves with their singles. In 1991, they reached Gold Record status as the production team behind Crystal Waters, with her global smash hit "Gypsy Woman", and in 1994 with "100% Pure Love", from her gold Mercury LP-"Storyteller" (her second album). In 1992, they produced the debut album for R&B duo Mass Order on Columbia Records, spawning the international club hit "Lift Every Voice (Take Me Away)".

Their studio wizardry has been well documented in the charts and on dancefloors the world over under their Basement Boys guise as well as Those guys, 33 1/3 Queen, 007 and Jasper Street Company monikas. They have remixed high profile artists such as Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Lenny Kravitz, and Paula Abdul, and, even with mainstream acceptance, the Basement Boys have remained true to their DJ roots, remixing underground artists like Shaun Escoffery, Bob Sinclair, and The Shamen. In addition, they continue to expose and nurture new talent on their own label, Basement Boys Records, which was established in 1995 later launching their Gospel imprint God’s House Records and their experimental label, Elephunk Records.

Now in 2021, Basement Boys Records proudly announce their 100th single release and 30th year in the music business as an active recording label!  BBR100 is a collaboration between Byron Stingily and Basement Boys Co-founder Teddy Douglas. Holding down the 100th release (We Belong Together) is the legendary multi-faceted singer/songwriter/producer Byron Stingily. As one third of the Chicago-bred, world renown trio, Ten City and as its primary lead vocalist, Byron’s velvety falsetto graced such House Music staples as “Devotion”, “That’s the Way Love Is”, “My Piece of Heaven” along with scores of other classic House music favorites. As a solo artist, Byron went on to create such memorable House jewels as “Get Up” and “It’s Over” a classic collaboration with the Basement Boys for his project on Nervous Records.

Over their 35 year plus involvement with music, The Basement Boys have always had their ears to the future, with a knowledge, respect and love of the past. Their solid disco, soul, R&B, gospel and even rock roots have given them an open mind and ear for discovering fresh sounds and talent, and with an array of artists like Marcell, Vinx, Those Guys, Jasper Street Co., Mudfoot Jones and a vast catalog of unreleased and remixable tracks, you can be sure that the rumblings of soulful sounds from the Basement Boys will continue to move one and all for years to come.  Some records in the pipeline is a compilation featuring prominent artists like Rochelle Fleming, Barbara Tucker, Navasha Daya, among others called Monday Night Studio Sessions Live @ Maxwell (featuring a few of the artists who performed live at Teddy Douglas' legendary monthly club night in Baltimore, MD).  A new DJ mix by Tony Humphries, mixing classic Basement Boys tracks.  A tribute to Quincy Jones and more music from Vinx, produced by the Basement Boys.  The future is bright for more new classics from Basement Boys Productions.
